ILEC Co-Founder John Mattone Featured in CEOWORLD Magazine

Intelligent Leadership Executive Coaching (ILEC) co-founder John Mattone was recently featured in CEOWORLD Magazine, a leading global business magazine for CEOs, CFOs, high-level executives, business leaders, and high net-worth individuals. Mattone authored a byline entitled, “How Leaders Can Retain Employees During the Great Resignation.”

It’s a thought-provoking piece that provides some great analysis of how the pandemic has altered and disrupted the intersection of industry and commerce in the last two years. But regardless of the business sector or channel, companies both large and small have had to contend with the stunning pace of employee resignations. At last count, the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reported nearly 40 million in 2021—and that total is just for the first 10 months of the year.

How do we slow the rate of this ongoing mass exodus? According to Mattone, it’s similar to treating an arterial wound—applying direct pressure. In this case, the direct pressure should be applied internally, taking the form of establishing a transformative company culture. Then and only then can organizations stop the bleeding out of employee talent. Below are two primary takeaways from Mattone’s byline.

Leaders Must Turn to Empathy

In the current state of things, CEOs and other corporate leaders have their hands full, dealing with an assortment of pandemic-related challenges such as supply chain disruption, rising inflation, and of course—a crucial lack of skilled labor. Yet this outward-facing focus comes at the expense of a company’s true currency, a struggling workforce that remains largely remote. On employee retention, Mattone advises, “To retain employees, leaders must evaluate the heart and soul of their organization and ask the tough questions like, ‘How do I show concern and compassion? Do I truly care for the people here? Do I have the courage to show my heart to people?’”

Leaders Aren’t Stepping Up

Organizations who lack transparency and remain perilously out of touch with their employees are at risk of further employee resignation. Many haven’t responded well, simply because the company’s leadership refuses to step up and account for the current situation. As Mattone shares, ILEC coaches can see it happening with a few of their clients. Real leadership is showing up, stepping up, being accountable, and addressing what needs to be done. Then, having the courage to follow through.
